Tips On Finding Inner Peace During Recovery

If you’ve left a life of broken dreams and scattered drug paraphernilia behind you and are embarking on a new journey as a sober person in recovery, congratulations. Getting clean can be one of the hardest things for any person to accomplish, but the struggle is completely worth it. However, anyone who has traversed the challenging road of recovery can tell you that finding inner peace can be a struggle. It’s impossible to just snap your fingers and build self-love; instead, it’s something that you have to work to achieve.

But just because something is challenging doesn’t mean that it’s impossible. To help you on your road to finding inner peace and self-love, here are some tips that will be helpful to you on your journey.

Forgive Yourself and Don’t Dwell on Regret

One of the hardest things for sober people to deal with can be feeling a sense of overwhelming regret. Perhaps they regret specific things they did while they were using or perhaps they just regret the time that they wasted during their addiction. It can feel easy to get wrapped up in regret and dwell on the past. However, if you want to find peace, it’s important to forgive yourself and to avoid dwelling on the past.

Don’t Rush Yourself

Again, you can’t snap your fingers and become a new person overnight. Recovery and self-reinvention is a marathon, not a sprint. While it’s important to try new healthy habits and work on your self-improvement, don’t rush yourself. Becoming the better person that you want to be will absolutely take some time. It’s a gradual process.

Eat Well

During the peak of your rehabilitation, you might have been eating junk food to stave off cravings for substances. While this is normal, it’s important to gradually adopt better eating habits as you move forward in your recovery process. Whole and plant foods will really help you to feel healthy and peaceful from the inside. It’s okay to have indulgences here and there, but try to eat as cleanly and naturally as possible.

Try Meditation and Yoga

Meditation and yoga might seem like “hippie hobbies,” but they can really help you to improve your self-love and sense of inner peace. You don’t have to become an expert overnight. Try some basic guided meditations and beginner yoga videos online. As you progress, you can try signing up for some local classes in your area.

Join Recreational Groups

When you’re a recovered addict, you might suddenly find yourself with a lack of a social life and a lot of free time. It’s better to find something to do than it is to just sit around dwelling on how bored you are. Look for recreational groups in your area, especially groups that are targeted specifically towards people in recovery. It’s a great way to master a new hobby or sport, in addition to being a phenomenal way to meet new people and make friends who share your passion for health and clean living.

Keep A Diary

One of the best ways to come to terms with something you’re feeling is by expression it rather than suppressing it. This is one of the reasons why people in recovery go to support groups and therapy. However, you can’t be in a group or in your therapist’s office every hour of the day. For those other times, consider keeping a diary. It’s a great way to keep track of your feelings and to work through difficult emotions on your own. Plus, you can make a note of the things you would like to discuss when you see your therapist or recovery specialist.

Feel Gratitude and Enjoyment

As you go through your daily activities, try to feel genuine gratitude and enjoyment. Feeling grateful for the things that you have is a wonderful way to keep yourself in a positive state of mind. Feeling sincere enjoyment is also helpful to your overall mood and level of optimism for the future. On some days it might feel hard to find something to smile about, but try your hardest to feel grateful, positive and hopeful for the future.

The decision to get clean and turn your life around is a difficult one, but an admirable one. Remember, it’s crucial that you don’t rush yourself as you work on building self-love and a feeling of inner peace. Moving from such a negative place to a positive place can take some time. This is why you should remember to always take it one day at a time.
