What you need to know about the rising STI rates in seniors

Society can be very judgmental when it comes to taboo subjects like sex and STIs. Lots of people tend to assume that older people are less interested in sex, so they struggle to imagine that STIs could be an issue for seniors – but in reality, STIs are an issue for both young and old people. In fact, STI rates for seniors are on the rise.

Here’s everything you need to know about the rising STI rates for seniors.

Rise in STIs across the western world

Various studies have seen increasing STI rates across the globe. The UK has seen a significant rise in both gonorrhoea and syphilis. Gonorrhoea cases have risen by 22% and syphilis cases have risen by 20%. This is fairly serious – but the problem isn’t just in the UK. Europe has also seen a rise in chlamydia cases, and the same can be said for the US – recent research from the CDC (the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) found around 2.3 million cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis.

While STIs are on the rise for both young adults and older adults, you may be surprised to learn that the climb is steeper for older adults. In fact, a study from patients who use the athenahealth network found that patients who are over 60 account for the largest increase in treatments for STIs.

What could have caused the rise in STIs?

We live in a time where people are more informed about STIs than ever before – so why is there a rise in STIs, especially for older people? Some researchers believe that it could be linked to the fact that sex is less taboo now, so many people feel more confident about sleeping with multiple partners. Another issue could be that people feel embarrassed about getting tested, so they put it off or simply don’t go. For this reason, it is importance to normalise getting tested.
